Productivity convergence and spatial dependence among Spanish regions

چکیده

This paper estimates the evolution of labor productivity disparities among 48 Spanish regions over 1980-1996 according to the concepts of βand σ-convergence and emphasizes the importance of including both spatial effects and a disaggregate analysis at a sectoral level. Various recent contributions have tested the origin of productivity differentials among regions in Europe (Esteban, 2000; Maudos et al., 2000; Cuadrado-Roura et al., 1999, among others). However, despite the literature focusing on the essential role of spatial dependence, the impact of neighboring locations’ productivity has not been widely investigated. The results display that spatial effects vary from one sector to another and βconvergence in labor productivity is greater at the aggregate level than at the level of agriculture and industry, but not of services. When σ -convergence is examined in order to measure the narrowing of inequalities, it reveals that convergence occurs in aggregate labor productivity but not in productivities by sector. The reason comes from a transfer of resources from agriculture towards more productive sectors that has been more pronounced in the poor regions than in the rich ones. § The author would like to thank Julie Le Gallo for her valuable comments.

The Evaluation of Suitability of Spatial Error STAR Model for Modeling Convergence of Social Welfare of Iran's Provinces

T he purpose of this paper is the evaluation of suitability ofspatial error STAR model for modeling convergence of social welfare of Iran's provinces between 2000 and 2013. In this paper the LM tests show that the non-linear method is appropriate for convergence evaluation. In addition, the results indicate that 2 groups of provinces are separable: group 1 in which the social welfare...

Spatial Dependence with Common Factors: A Case Study of Growth in Iran's Provinces

The economic components of a geographic region, such as its economic growth, are influenced by the spillover effect of other regions’ economic components. In addition to these spatial dependences, there are common factors, such as oil price, that induce a correlation among the economic variables of the geographic regions. Thus, it is necessary to distinguish between the dependence created by th...

Investigating Agricultural Productivity Growth and Convergence in Iran and Eastern African Countries

The issue of convergence or divergence of productivity has important policy for regional poverty reduction and increasing standards of living. If productivity converges to a common level without intervention, there is little need for explicit policies in lagging regions to promote catch up. On the other hand, productivity has divergence trend, then explicit policies would be needed to prevent f...

Agglomeration, Spatial Interaction and Convergence in the EU

We investigate the convergence process among EU regions between 1980-2002 taking into account the effects of spatial heterogeneity and spatial spillover effects. The spatial regimes model allows for different steady-state growth paths. In contrast to previous analyses, the regimes in this paper refer to spatial categories, i.e. we assume that agglomerations, urbanised and rural regions are char...

Human Capital Spillovers, Productivity and Regional Convergence in Spain

This paper analyses the differential impact of human capital, in terms of different levels of schooling, on regional productivity and convergence. The potential existence of geographical spillovers of human capital is also considered by applying spatial panel data techniques. The empirical analysis of Spanish provinces between 1980 and 2007 confirms the positive impact of human capital on regio...
